Evaluations - What to Expect

Your Responsibilities

The Evaluator's Responsibilities

The Evaluator's Responsibilities

Bring the portfolio(s) and your child(ren).

Portfolio should include:  some samples of your child's work, whatever you keep as your log, and any standardized test results (for students in grades 3, 5, and 8)

You will need to demonstrate that "an appropriate education has occurred."  This means that your home education has included "instruction in the required subjects for the time required" and that you child "demonstrates sustained progress in the overall program."

During the evaluation, the evaluator will:

- interview your child (NOT a test of their abilities)

- review the portfolio

Once the evaluator has completed the interview and checked the portfolio, he/she will be able to certify whether or not an appropriate education has occurred.  A written evaluation will be provided for you to submit to your local school district by June 30.

Final Note

The Evaluator's Responsibilities

Final Note

This is not meant to be a stressful event for you or your child.  Allow it to be a time to show off the things they've learned or experienced.  The evaluator's role is not to judge how well you homeschool your child.  The evaluator's role is to certify you have done your job for the year.  That's all.

**Please download the end of year reminder form in the Getting Started section, if you need a reminder to schedule your evaluation in time for submitting it to the district.**
